WASHINGTON — The political arm of the Congressional Progressive Caucus is launching its first-ever independent expenditure by weighing into a rare open seat in the suburbs north of New York City.

The CPC’s political action committee is investing about $100,000 in digital ads and mailers to boost attorney Mondaire Jones in the 10-candidate race for the deep-blue district from which longtime Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) is retiring.

Jones, an attorney who worked in the Obama administration, would be the first openly gay black member of Congress. He supports key progressive platforms like the Green New Deal and "Medicare for All" and has nabbed endorsements from Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) ahead of the June 23 primary.

“If we had more people like Mondaire in Congress,” a narrator says in the 30-second spot, which will run on digital platforms, including Facebook and YouTube, “maybe we wouldn’t still be fighting to protect health care, or the public schools we rely on, or our fundamental civil rights.”

Jones launched a run for the district last summer, well before Lowey, who chairs the House Appropriations Committee, decided to forgo a 17th term.

The investment is part of an ongoing effort by leading progressives to influence Democratic primary fields. The PAC has vowed to spend at least $1 million in support of its endorsed candidates in the 2020 cycle and describes itself as one of the only outside spenders dedicated to solely to helping left-leaning candidates.

“Winning the fight for Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and shared prosperity and justice requires electing a progressive majority that is willing to relentlessly stand by the ideas it believes in,” Reps. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) and Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), the co-chairs of the caucus' PAC, said in a joint statement. “That is why our grassroots-funded organization is committing significant resources to support bold progressive leaders who will be the present and the future of the progressive movement.”

An independent-expenditure operation could help progressives wield the kind of power that conservatives do in the GOP with the political arms of the House Freedom Caucus and the Club for Growth.

Jones faces steep competition for the district, which has not been open since 1989. It covers parts of Rockland and Westchester counties and includes some of the most affluent towns in New York, including Chappaqua, the post-presidency home of Bill and Hillary Clinton.

EMILY’s List is rallying behind a different candidate: Evelyn Farkas, who served as a national security adviser and Defense Department official in the Obama administration. Also in the race: Adam Schleifer, a prosecutor in the 2019 college admissions scandal who has seeded his campaign with nearly $1.7 in self-funding; state Assemblymember David Buchwald; and state Sen. David Carlucci.
