Images of molds and renders that are purportedly for cases for the Apple iPhone 12 series have been leaked. In one of the photos, shared by @Jin_Store, it’s clear to see three different-sized molds placed next to each other on a table. This would fit the rumor that there will be three different-sized smartphones in the iPhone 12 lineup across four devices: 5.4-inch iPhone 12, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Max, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro, and the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. The familiar square-shaped camera housing on the rear is visible in a couple of the mold images and in the renders.
What has been perturbing most commentators in regard to this current leak is the apparent size of the notches on these supposed iPhone 12 molds. Official CAD leaks showed the iPhone 12 devices with much smaller notches than the ones that can be seen on these molds, and iPhone fans have been expecting Apple to reduce the size of the notch for the next series of smartphones.
However, as pointed out by 9To5Mac, the size of the notch does not affect case-makers, who would not know the exact dimensions of the notches on the future Apple flagship smartphones anyway – so there is nothing for potential future iPhone 12 owners to be really concerned about in regard to the divisive feature, at least for the moment, as they are based on best guesses.
The overall design language is reminiscent of the current iPad Pro and the old iPhone 4. The corners are gently rounded off and the edges are flat, and it seems reasonable to assert that Apple is likely planning on copying this design choice over to future products. The iPhone 12 was expected to be released in September, but due to the effects of the COVID-19 global pandemic a reveal date has now been penciled in for October.
