A 126-year-old Dunthorpe mansion has been the status residence for some of Portland’s prominent players. Formally known as Cedarhurst, the estate has been owned by members of founding families, the Ladds and Talbots, then a Vanderbilt descendant, the state’s attorney general and former Portland Trail Blazers center and Los Angeles Lakers broadcaster Mychal Thompson.

The region’s leading architecture firm of the era, Whidden and Lewis, designed the classic 1895 Colonial revival-style house to have columns supporting a railed balcony over the entrance and a wraparound verandah.

Inside are box-beamed ceilings, crown molding and surprises: Walls of a secret cocktail bar are plastered with maps from heiress Gloria Vanderbilt’s travels.

The formal library has red felt-lined walls and beside the dining room’s leaded glass windows and dark wood-stained mantel are blue walls, red-and-gold draperies and a contemporary rug with swirling bands of blue and red resting over the hardwood floor.

“Eclectic high style” is the way Mimi McCaslin and Anne-Marie Knapp of Luxe Christie’s International Real Estate describe the modern updates. The brokers have listed the 1.65-acre property at 11175 S. Riverwood Road for sale at $4,480,000

In addition to the mansion with 8,800 square feet of living space, there are outdoor environments. Sets of French doors open to a covered terrace where a sitting area is warmed by a stone fireplace. Brick walkways and stairs lead to a portico and pool as well as a temperature-controlled, English-style greenhouse.

The driveway stops at one garage that shelters six automobiles; a two-car garage is next to the basketball court.

In the kitchen are period-perfect Santos mahogany cabinets and a farm sink installed in marble counters. Beyond the Wolf stove is a pizza oven and wine cooler. Felt-lined drawers for silver are in the butler’s pantry just off the dining room.

“A sophisticated luxury home buyer will care about the story and history of the estate,” says McCaslin, who says she and Knapp have been impressed with the caliber of potential buyers who have toured the mansion.

“Because of the rare quality and style of the estate, I envision an elegant buyer who has the wherewithal to not only maintain the property, but to fill it with art and their own touches,” says McCaslin. “This is someone who will be buying a lifestyle home that carries a certain prestige as well.”
