High School students sell house for record amount - KSNB Local 4

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - With houses being bought up as soon as they hit the real estate market, students at the Career Pathways Institute (CPI) in Grand Island sold a home they haven’t even finished building.

Seniors in the construction pathway are building a home for their capstone project.

“It’s cool like you built this with other people, kids like high school students. It’s pretty cool you know,” said Senior Luis Anzora.

They’ve only got a couple months before it’s all done and it’s already been sold for a record amount.

“It sold at the end of February which is always a good feeling to have our houses sell right away, so then they can start planning for the next year’s house,” said CPI Construction Teacher Brett Forsman.

The price of building materials have skyrocketed during the pandemic.

“We have longer lead times with the pandemic,” Forsman said. “You really got to try and really forward think and stay organized to try and make sure that you have those things here for when the students are ready to build, we can keep going.”

This is one of the reason’s why the house sold for a record-breaking price.

“The market in the area has driven the price up as well and, you know, our goal is to try and have a house that looks a little bit different. We don’t want the same looking house,” Forsman said.

They’ve been working on the home since the beginning of the school year. The 2,000 square-foot space has five bedrooms, three bathrooms and finished basement.

“This is their house that they’re going to build, they’re going to take pride in and I’m just kind of here to guide them along the way,” Forsman said.

The concrete was poured for them but otherwise students helped design and build the home from top to bottom.

“We didn’t finish our house from last year, so it was hard to get back into the rhythm of it. It was kind of challenging but then you got in the flow of it,” Anzora said.

Foresman said the students worked hard even while wearing a mask the entire time.

“They worked really hard this year and they’re very proud of their work and that’s exciting as an instructor when you see that,” Foresman said.

They expect to be done with the project sometime in the next couple months. The money made from the house will go towards the next home-building project.
