What: One of the things that make Guilford, Roland Park and Homeland so visually interesting, is that all of the houses are different. There are not blocks and blocks of nearly identical houses on a strict grid of roads. This house, built of stucco and stone, delights your eye with numerous details.

Bedford Place is one of those Guilford Streets that you think you can find, but then have to consult your GPS for the actual route. And that’s not a bad thing. This house, at 4404 Bedford Place is one of a dozen nestled just off of Charles and Cold Spring, but it’s completely private and secluded.

The stone and stucco façade of this house features an arched window with a small Juliet balcony. The arched front door echoes the window, and as you move into the house, you see the arched door theme continues. Both the living and dining rooms are light-filled and each has a fireplace. There is an additional room which could be used as either a study or a ground-floor bedroom, with an adjacent full bathroom. The kitchen has been modernized with sparkling white subway tile set in a herringbone pattern. An enclosed sun porch with full-length windows and a terra cotta tile floor can be used three seasons of the year.

The second floor has three bedrooms. The main bedroom has a charming tucked-away window seat, perfect for catching up on the latest bestseller. The adjacent bath still retains some of its original features, including a built-in medicine cabinet and marble-walled shower. Where: Bedford Place is just off of Charles Street and Cold Spring Lane at the north end of Guilford. It sits on a small private circle with limited vehicular access. This house is close to many public and private schools, and a very brief walk to Loyola and Notre Dame Universities. It’s a short drive to the Rotunda, and shopping on 40^th Street and Roland Avenue. It’s a straight shot south on St. Paul Street to the downtown business area, and across Cold Spring Lane to the JFX.

Final Appraisal: If you want a Guilford address, but don’t need a Guilford-size house, this is a great option. The gated parking and fully fenced back yard make the house perfect for children. The possibility to use one of the en-suite ground floor rooms as a bedroom makes the house more versatile. As with most of the houses built in the 1920s, the house is full of interesting details.
