TYLER — Construction of one part of a planned $3.9 million athletic complex at the new Russell-Tyler-Ruthton School has been delayed while the district waits for a state building permit, RTR Superindendent David Marlette said.
However, Marlette said even with the delay, the field house at the athletic complex should still be finished in time for use in the fall.
In addition to construction of a new K-12 school building in Tyler, RTR has been making progress on an athletic complex, which will include a track and an artificial turf football field. The complex will help make it possible for RTR to vacate the football field at the former RTR High School site in Tyler. To go with the athletic fields, the school district was also planning to build a field house that would have space for school van parking, restrooms and a concession stand.
RTR learned it would need to wait to start construction of the field house about a month ago, Marlette said. Because the field house would be built within the Tyler city limits, Marlette said RTR had obtained a building permit from the city. But a state inspector said the school district would need to apply for a state building permit instead.
“We were surprised the state official didn’t allow us to use the city permit,” Marlette said. He said the wait for a state permit could take longer, but he expected the field house would still be finished this summer. The structure isn’t complicated, and construction should move fairly quickly once it gets started, Marlette said.
In the meantime, work continues on the rest of the athletic complex and on finishing the RTR School. Marlette said carpeting and flooring work is currently underway inside the school building. Construction is planned to be complete in time for school to start in the fall.
