There’s a new leader of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as of Monday.
State Rep. Bryan Cutler, a Republican from Lancaster County, won support from his peers to replace Mike Turzai as speaker.
Turzai suddenly resigned recently to take the job as general counsel for Peoples Natural Gas.
“As we each carry the torch for the next generation, let me be the first to pledge to you what I hope you will pledge with me: First, let us treat each other, other elected leaders, and our constituents, with respect. Second, let us not ask someone else to do something that we ourselves would not do. And finally, when our term of service is concluded, let us leave things better than the way we found them. And let us do our work together,” Cutler said in a speech to the House.
Cutler has served as majority leader since 2019. He first took office in 2007 and made his way up the leadership ranks, the shortest rise of any speaker since 1967.
Cutler has worked as an x-ray technologist and a lawyer. He lives with his wife and three children on a farm.
State Rep. Kerry Benninghoff, a Republican from Centre and Mifflin, was elected Republican majority leader, taking Cutler’s previous post.
“I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity to lead, but most importantly, the opportunity to serve,” Benninghoff said. “Pennsylvania, like much of the nation, is at a critical crossroads. The good news is, we can see the challenges we face as opportunities to catapult change. If we work together, I believe we can usher in a bright and exciting future for our Commonwealth.”
