Protesters march to Lansing Mayor Andy Schor's house, demand his resignation - Lansing State Journal

A group of protesters marched to the home of Lansing Mayor Andy Schor Saturday night to demand his resignation "over inaction on police abuses," according to a statement posted on Twitter.

Video posted from the account of Will Lawrence (@wlawren90) shows dozens of marchers chanting "respect our wishes or resign."  The same account posted a photo of protesters on the lawn of Schor's Moores River Drive home.

"There are things that we want done..." said organizer Paul Birdsong, after the protest. "He isn’t going to come out here so we went to his house."

But he said he felt Schor had heard them.

"The type of man he is, you really got to get under his nails."

"The protesters tonight met with me, shared their thoughts, and gave me their list of things that they want to see happen," Schor said in a statement to the Lansing State Journal. "I’m always interested in talking to people about the things they want to see in Lansing, and I will add their issues to the list of things that I am hearing from people as we craft an action plan moving forward."

Schor has faced criticism since a Facebook Live event hosted by Black Lives Matter Lansing turned tense Wednesday night when activists questioned the mayor about police abuses and he floundered.

The clash culminated with Angela Waters-Austin, a co-founder of the group's Lansing chapter, said if Schor had done any of the things he pledged to protect the city’s black community, no one would be where they are today and called on the mayor to resign.

“I made an ask of you. I asked you to resign, I’d like an answer,” Waters Austin said.

“I’m not planning to resign right now,” Schor said. “I have a commitment to serving the people of Lansing.”

Asked if he would “defund the police,” Schor declined to do so, saying "I think the people of Lansing deserve protection."

Schor later apologized for his responses, saying he had "intended to come to the forum to listen, and I was not prepared for the questions asked by the other panelists."

"Important ideas were shared with me that I need to hear," he said.
