House of the Week: Family cherishes the memories made at their custom-built LaFayette home - syracuse.com

LAFAYETTE, N.Y. – It is the memories which a family accumulates which makes a home special.

Over the past 18 years, since 2002, Sandy and Ed Claffey, along with their daughter, Samantha, have cherished every minute they have spent in their custom-built Transitional Colonial at 2525 O’Connell Road in LaFayette.

Ed, originally from Rochester, was a homebuilder and renovator and he always wanted to build his own home in the LaFayette area. He just had to talk his fiancée, Sandy, into it.

He did but only after agreeing that the home’s design would include a large wraparound porch and Sandy was allowed to make the home as “colorful as it can be.”

“There can be no white walls,” she remembers telling him.

Ed and Sandy’s brother began to build the house, situating it just right, so it received just as much sunlight as possible.

In 2005, the couple was married in the backyard.

“We used our wraparound porch to do the receiving line,” she said, “then had everyone continue on to the bar in the walk-out basement.”

The porch, with its mahogany rails and floor, has become a favorite place for Sandy.

“If the weather is nice,” she said, “I start my day there with a cup of tea and spend lots of time reading there.”

She describes the views from the porch, which look out over farmer’s fields and the Jamesville Reservoir, as “absolutely gorgeous.”

Since the home was finished in 2002, it has become the chief “hangout house” for family and friends.

It has hosted countless Easter egg hunts and Thanksgiving dinners over the years. The porch offers a bird’s eye of the Jamesville Balloonfest.

“You can sit on the back deck and see down to Jamesville Reservoir,” Sandy mentioned, “so when the balloons would rise you can see them come up and head our way.”

At Christmas, the tradition was to have Samantha pick out the largest tree she could find for the great room, which, because of its vaulted ceilings, it could easily accommodate.

After the holidays, the tree was allowed to dry out outdoors and became the fuel for the first bonfire in spring.

A few weeks later, her daughter had another tradition. She and her friends would burn their schoolwork they no longer needed in another bonfire at the end of the school year.

(It is no wonder that Samantha is, according to her mother, “not happy” about the home’s future sale.)

With four large bedrooms upstairs and plenty of space on the first floor and finished basement, Sandy says they were able to “put a lot of people up without ever feeling cramped.”

With their daughter moving out, the spacious home now has become too large for Ed and Sandy, so they are selling.

“There is not much I would change,” she said about her home. “It is great for raising a family.”

Ed, who his wife says, “loves to be busy,” is putting the finishing touches on a new ranch for them in Manlius.

Besides doing the work himself, Sandy believes they would not be able to find a home that makes them the feel the same way as their home in LaFayette did.

“We are spoiled,” she said.

An open house is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27, from noon to 2 p.m.

There is a small dining area just off the kitchen which opens into the great room.

Living areas: The over 4,000-square-foot home was built by the owner who laid it out to take advantage of the sunlight and views of the surrounding countryside. The great room joins with the kitchen for a great entertaining space. Hardwood floors and vaulted ceilings, with powerful skylights, and a wood-burning fireplace are features in the room. “It is our hang-out room,” Sandy Claffey said. There is access to the back deck from that room. The lower level also has a formal dining room, which can seat at least ten people at holidays and parties. There is a “very handy” home office and a small “reading room,” which the owners thought might make a nice library. The home has central air-conditioning and radiant heating throughout.

Bedrooms: There are four bedrooms in the house, all on the top floor. The owners believe that more could be added on the first floor if needed. The master bedroom is quite large and has its own bathroom and private sitting room. “It is where I go for peace and quiet,” Sandy said. Furnished with a cozy gas fireplace and television, she jokes that if she had a refrigerator there, she might never leave. “You can close the French doors there and have a little privacy.” The laundry room is on this level with the bedrooms.

Bathrooms: There are five bathrooms in the home. The master bathroom is very large and features an open show area leading to a Jacuzzi tub. There are double sinks and the many windows gives views of the outdoors from the tub.

Finished basement: The basement was finished a few years after the rest of the house. It was at first for Ed Claffey’s friends when they became too boisterous and it was later adopted as the hang-out place for their daughter and her friends. The full wet bar has a dishwasher and a refrigerator. (Sandy said that “all adult beverages” was taken upstairs in a cooler when her daughter had friends over.) There is space for television viewing, exercise equipment and an air hockey/billiards table. There is a full bathroom down there. There are walk-outs which lead into the backyard and under the deck.

Outdoors: The home is built on three-acre lot which is very private. Sandy says they cannot see their neighbors' home during the summer because of the trees. The wraparound porch is great for morning tea or coffee and reading. It offers a beautiful view of the surrounding country. For skiing enthusiasts, the property is close to Song and Labrador Mountains. Owner says the property is just 3.8 miles from Route 81. There is an attached three-car garage.
