- Google announced a new Hum to Search feature that allows you to find songs simply by humming the tune.
- The feature uses machine learning to decipher a matching melody from your amazing humming skills.
- SoundHound — an app designed to find songs playing around you — has had this feature for years.
Today, Google unveiled a new feature for its Search product. Dubbed “Hum to Search,” it allows you to decipher a song simply by humming the melody into your phone.
Previously, Google Assistant could quickly decipher songs playing around you. All you needed to do is say, “Hey Google, what’s this song?” and it would listen and let you know. Now, though, you don’t even need the song — just do your best to hum what you know and Google will do its best to match it up.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because SoundHound has had this feature for years. However, it’s possible that Google’s system might be more accurate than SoundHound’s.
Hum to Search: How it works
If you have a song stuck in your head, here’s how to find out what is:
- Fire up Google Assistant on your phone however you normally do so.
- Once open and ready for a voice command, say, “What is this song?” or “What’s this song?”
- Assistant will start listening. Do your best to hum the tune.
- If you do it well enough, Google should tell you the correct answer.
Google’s Hum to Search is available in English on iOS and in over 20 languages on Android. It will
become even more prevalent soon on both platforms.
