Cyberpunk 2077 seemingly has performance modes on Xbox Series X, but not PS5 - Video Games Chronicle

Cyberpunk 2077 appears to offer performance modes on Xbox Series X at release, but not on PlayStation 5.

The PS4 and Xbox One versions of CD Projekt Red’s much-anticipated RPG were sent to press on Tuesday, and VGC tested both versions running on next-gen consoles via backwards compatibility.

Full next-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077 aren’t due out until next year, but the game’s developer has said the last-gen console releases will run better on the newest systems.

However, analysis of both Xbox One and PS4 versions running via backwards compatibility suggests that only Xbox Series X offers the option to choose between a higher resolution or smoother framerate on day one.

The PS4 version of Cyberpunk appears to default to 60fps on PlayStation 5, but there’s seemingly no option to sacrifice frame rate for a higher resolution like on Xbox’s next-gen console.

It’s not clear if this feature is intentionally missing or due to be added later. VGC is awaiting comment from CD Projekt Red.

Cyberpunk’s seeming lack of PS5 performance options could be due to an issue with the way the console handles backwards compatibility.

Recently, a number of games including Star Wars: Squadrons, Call of Duty: Warzone and Rocket League have received performance updates for those playing on Xbox Series X, but not PS5.

Enabling next-gen performance features such as 120fps reportedly requires a full native port on PS5, while Microsoft allows such features to be added via a backwards compatibility patch.

Rocket League developer Psyonix explained in a statement issued to Eurogamer: “Enabling 120hz on Xbox Series X|S is a minor patch, but enabling it on PS5 requires a full native port due to how backwards compatibility is implemented on the console, and unfortunately wasn’t possible due to our focus elsewhere.”

On Tuesday, VGC published the first retail Cyberpunk 2077 images showing how the much-anticipated open-world game compares on consoles to a high-end PC.

In VGC’s Cyberpunk 2077 review, which was based on our time with the PC version of the game, our critic called it “a stunning achievement, if you can overlook the glitches”.

The game currently has a 91 Metascore on review aggregation site Metacritic, based on 46 PC reviews.

Cyberpunk 2077 will initially be released for PS4, Xbox One and PC. It will be playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S via backwards compatibility, with a “proper, full-blown next-gen version” planned for release next year.

You can pre-order Cyberpunk 2077 from Amazon (UK), Amazon (US), Walmart, Best Buy and Game, among other retailers.
