ST. PETERSBURG — Ace pitcher Blake Snell, who was instrumental in the Tampa Bay Rays’ 2020 World Series-making season, is selling his St. Petersburg house. The property was posted in the Multiple Listing Service, with a price tag of $1.4 million, Monday afternoon.
Snell was traded to the San Diego Padres late last year, and so is shedding the Shore Acres house he called home during baseball seasons past. The property has four bedrooms and two full bathrooms and is 2,952 square feet.
“It’s bittersweet for me to be listing this home. I will miss spending time at this house with loved ones and friends that I have made through the Tampa Bay Rays Organization while enjoying the fresh air and waterfront views in St. Pete,” Snell said in a written statement. “And I will most definitely miss Fresh Kitchen on 4th Street.”
Perhaps the home’s most notable feature is the custom waterfront pool — which has “Zilla” emblazoned on its floor in mosaic tiles, a nod to Snell’s nickname, “Snellzilla.” The origin of that name comes from the fact that Snell is an avid video-gamer, and his older brother used the moniker as his gaming handle — which Blake Snell then commandeered and it’s since taken off, said Liane Jamason, the listing agent on the sale.
Jamason, who’s the broker and owner of Dwell Real Estate’s St. Petersburg office, also represented Snell when he purchased the property in 2019 for $875,000.
Since that purchase, Snell has spent more than $200,000 on renovating the house, particularly its outdoor entertainment area, according to a news release. Some of that work includes a never-used hot tub worth more than $20,000; a new, heated freshwater pool with color-changing lights; in-pool lounge chairs and a custom concrete arch with a waterfall.
“Whomever buys this house, that’s what they’re going to buy it for: that outdoor living space, somebody who wants to be in the water, whether the pool or out in the bay,” Jamason said, noting the home has a dock with one lift for a boat and two for jet skis.
Snell also added an outdoor kitchen that includes an outdoor TV, bar, grill, dishwasher and ice maker, according to the listing. Indoors, the home has a 12-foot-high foyer, a master bedroom that overlooks Tampa Bay and custom built-in closets in every bedroom. Snell even added a fresh coat of paint and new carpet to the home.
Snell has already moved out of the house, Jamason said.
And as for that “Zilla” in the pool, she’s already looked into what it would cost for the next owner to have it removed, in case they don’t want to keep that personalized touch: About $2,500.
