House Session Abruptly Canceled After Domestic Terror Threat Warnings - Forbes

Topline

The House of Representatives on Wednesday canceled a planned Thursday session after the Capitol Police and other federal law enforcement agencies warned of a potential domestic terror threat on that day.

Key Facts

House leaders decided it was “possible to finish all of the House’s legislative work for the week” on Wednesday, including votes on two major pieces of legislation put forward by Democrats, a House leadership aide told Forbes.

The House is now scheduled to complete debate on the Justice In Policing Act and vote on both that bill and H.R. 1, an election reform bill, on Wednesday evening, an unexpected development that caught some House staff by surprise.

The development comes after the Capitol Police put out a statement Wednesday warning of “intelligence that shows a possible plot to to breach the Capitol” by an “identified militia group” on Thursday.

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security put out a separate bulletin about an “unidentified group of [militia violent extremists]” who “discussed plans to take control of the US Capitol and remove Democratic lawmakers” on Thursday, according to Politico and the NBC News.

The Capitol Police noted it has made “significant security upgrades” to the Capitol, including “establishing a physical structure and increasing manpower,” and said it is taking the intelligence “seriously.”

Key Background

March 4 has been held up as former President Donald Trump’s “true inauguration day” by believers of the QAnon conspiracy theory, who view President Joe Biden’s victory as illegitimate. Trump supporters previously tried to overturn Biden’s election victory on Jan. 6 by overpowering police and storming the Capitol.

Surprising Fact

The nine House Democrats who made the case for President Donald Trump’s conviction in a Senate impeachment trial last month have had their security details extended through the end of the week, according to the Washington Post. The Post also reported that some congressional offices are “asking staffers to stay home for the day.”

Crucial Quote

Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) said in a statement he was briefed by the Capitol Police about “additional interest in the Capitol for the dates of March 4th – 6th by a militia group” and “the potential for protests and demonstration activity.” Ryan added that he was “pleased” with the security measures undertaken by the Capitol Police.

Chief Critic

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) tweeted that while he is “grateful” for House leadership’s concern for the safety of members, he is “disappointed” by the decision. “We cannot allow threats by misinformed, cowardly seditionists to impact our work in Congress,” he said, arguing that it “only rewards such behavior and emboldens traitors who which to harm our country.”

What To Watch For

The Senate is set to have a lengthy debate on amendments to Democrats’ $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package, and so far no indication has been given that the upper chamber plans to follow the House’s lead and cancel the session.
