Mr. Rogers' House is For Sale in Pittsburgh - Philadelphia Style Magazine

Mr. Rogers' house for sale in Pittsburgh

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, especially for buyers looking near Pittsburgh. The Steel City house where television host and universally-loved personality Mr. Rogers once lived is currently up for sale.

Situated in the Squirrel Hill residential area, Fred Rogers' former house on Northumberland Street boasts 3,700 square feet with a price tag of $850,000.

According to Next Pittsburgh, Rogers and his wife lived in the century-old brick home in the late 1950s and early '60s. Rogers was then attending Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (he was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1963), and worked as a composer, organist and puppeteer on “The Children’s Corner” at WQED.

The home features a large concrete porch with French doors and basketball hoops that hover over a driveway and two-car garage. The covered front entrance is tiled, and the front door opens into a living room with wall-panel molding and a fireplace.

Built in 1921, the five-bedroom, four-bathroom home keeps cozy with two fireplaces and a beautiful library off the dining room. The kitchen is quite modern with wood cabinets, stone countertops and exposed ceiling beams, plus an island for extra counter space. The kitchen counter wraps into a mudroom, creating a convenient small office space. Future owners of the home can stay in shape thanks to a gym on the third floor.

The charming home is no footnote in Mr. Rogers' story. Seller Allison Shin, who has lived in the home for about 10 years, told Next Pittsburgh that Mr. Rogers called the Northumberland abode “his favorite house.” Former neighborhood residents also said Mr. Rogers put on puppet shows for children when he lived in the Squirrel Hill house.

After he returned from a stint in Canadian television with his show Mister Rogers, the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood host purchased his famous 9,000-square-foot brick home at 1300 Beechwood Boulevard in 1966, before selling that home and moving to an Ellsworth Avenue apartment near the WQED studios in the 1980s. Rogers passed away in 2003, and his widow Joanne only recently passed in January 2021.

Linda Corcoran of Coldwell Banker in Squirrel Hill holds the listing. Learn more about the property's history via Next Pittsburgh.
