PEORIA (HOI) -- Despite having a swell of Orange and Blue support behind them at Carver Arena on Saturday afternoon, Illini alumni team House of 'Paign never quite found their footing and dropped their opening round matchup of The Basketball Tournament 64-58 to Jackson TN Underdawgs.
A physical matchup from the get-go, House of 'Paign struggled out of the gates in the first half despite and trailed by 6 at halftime.
They came back to the take the lead at the end of the third quarter thanks to some excellent play from Rayvonte Rice who led the way with 21 points, but a late fourth-quarter run from the Underdawgs proved to be the undoing for House of 'Paign as Marquis Weddle provided a clutch late bucket and the game-winning free throw to end House of 'Paign's TBT run before it really even got started.
An opening round exit was certainly not the plan for House of 'Paign after they made it to the Sweet 16 of their inaugural run in TBT in 2020, but the fan support for the Orange and Blue was loud, proud and, at times, raucous, at Carver Arena and that's something for which House of 'Paign is grateful.
"I mean, it means everything," House of 'Paign guard Rayvonte Rice said. "I think we had like, obviously, the biggest advantage probably here, right? I mean, all the orange in the crowd, hyping them up, getting up, standing up. It felt like being in college again. We appreciate them, they could have been doing a thousand other things. We appreciate them taking time out of their busy lives to come support us."
But the thanks didn't stop with the fans in attendance, head coach and GM Mike LaTulip says he's thankful for the players who came out to once again represent the Illini.
"I'm proud of these guys for wearing the orange and blue again," LaTulip said. "For sacrificing, you know, their time to come with us. So, I'm thankful for that."
LaTulip and Rice both hinted that they'd be back for another TBT run in 2022.
