One dead in two-house explosion in Warren - The Macomb Daily

One man is dead in a two-house explosion Sunday night in Warren that sent debris flying into neighbors’ yards and damaged several other homes and cars.

The blast took place about 6:30 p.m. the 13600 block of Villa Pointe Drive, east of Schoenherr Road and south of Martin Road. It ignited a second-alarm fire.

“The units are completely obliterated — the only thing left standing are the basements,” said Warren Fire Commissioner Skip McAdams. “The blast lifted the homes right off their foundations.”

The deceased man, who reportedly lived by himself and is in his 40s, authorities said. He was found in the basement of his condo unit.

Inside the other unit that blew up was a man who cared for an elderly woman. They both escaped injury but obviously were shaken up. He said he was about to take an evening nap when he heard a hissing sound coming from the furnace before the blast. He declined to identify himself.

A debris field saw bits of the houses scattered 50 yards in all directions, including Schoenherr.

Twelve vehicles were damaged in the explosion including three that were “totaled,” the fire commissioner said. Homes adjacent to the explosion had “significant” structure damage while about 10 others had what was described as light damage.

Tara Young lives a few blocks from the scene. Her elderly mother lives across the street from the explosion but was escorted out of her home.

“My mom called me to say a house blew up, but I thought she meant with a firecracker and didn’t think anything of it,” Young said. “Then I came outside of saw the smoke. It blew out her garage door and her front door. It was awful.”

Authorities suspect a natural gas malfunction was the cause of the fire, but added they hadn’t yet had a chance to conduct a thorough investigation.

The Salvation Army was reportedly on their way to provide temporary housing for residents whose property was damaged.
