House of the Week: Owner appreciates the ‘flexibility’ of his Jamesville country estate - syracuse.com

JAMESVILLE, N.Y. – At first, Dr. Derrick Suehs did not know what to think of the home at 6922 Frank Long Road in Jamesville.

Moving to Central New York from Texas in 1998, he did not think that the grand, country estate, built in 1987, with its stately façade of Georgian columns, would be the right fit for him and his family.

Initially, he thought that the 6,000 square foot home built on over five acres of wooded property was “overwhelming.”

“No, it was not love at first sight,” he said. “It seemed to be way too much.”

But then he studied the possibilities and quickly discovered the house was exactly what he wanted.

“We began to think about what the house could do for us,” Suehs said. “It was really advantageous.”

What he most appreciated about the property was its flexibility.

It was set in a private and quiet setting but was just minutes from downtown Syracuse.

It is great for entertaining and yet is also a “very quiet place.”

For example, the home’s elegant living room was perfect for intimate settings with small groups of friends. While the larger family room, called by Suehs the “gathering room,” with its billiard table and full bar, was the place for more boisterous celebrations.

“We do a lot of celebrating,” Suehs says, “and this home is pretty flexible.”

“We go crazy for Christmas and we can entertain 50 to 60 people in the house celebrating. We can fit at least one Christmas tree in every room.”

More fun can be had in the home’s basement, which has room for exercise equipment, a basketball game, a hot tub, and an indoor swimming pool.

(The pool’s dimensions are 32′ by 16′ and is eight-foot deep.)

When he wanted to get away from the noise, Suehs sought refuge in his library, where he could read and work without interruption.

“It was my nice escape place,” he said.

Outside, the property is heavily wooded and private. He says he rarely sees his neighbors and mentions that deer are frequent visitors.

Located on the top of a hill, Suehs says that in his 22 years he has yet to have a single trick-or-treater pay the home a visit.

“We buy the candy hoping and then I end up eating it.”

The grounds feature beautiful landscaping, gardens, a brick patio located off the gathering room is the place for summer barbecues, while a wood deck is a nice place to spend a quiet weekend afternoon.

The property has two garages and can easily hold six to seven cars between the two of them.

The garage near the brick patio has an in laws apartment, with two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and living room.

He and his wife are returning to Texas to be closer to family but will remember the house he has called home for the past 22 years.

“I have really enjoyed it, but family is the most important thing”

An open house is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 13, from noon to 2 p.m.

Modern appliances like a “smart” refrigerator and double ovens and stoves make meal preparation a snap. The kitchen features a small pantry and the house has a larger one in the basement. “You can really ‘hunker in’ in this house,” Derrick Suehs said. There is a large center island where the family gathers for breakfast but room enough for a large table to be pulled out for larger meals. A bar area in the gathering room looks into the kitchen for additional seating.

Living areas: This large, beautiful house was “designed for luxurious comfort” and with its wood and stone accents, "creates a synergy with the outdoors " Owner says the home has an “old sense of charm to it,” and appreciates the property’s great flexibility. Visitors arrive in a magnificent foyer with a beautiful double staircase and a wrap-around balcony. The formal living and dining rooms are elegant while the fun “gathering” room has a full bar and billiard table. The large space had a beautiful stone fireplace and has access to the brick patio outdoors. The home is perfect for large parties and celebrations. Bathrooms: There are five bathrooms in the house. The master bathroom has a whirlpool tub, built-in shelving, and a large vanity with double sinks.

Basement: The finished basement has more fun for anyone who visits the house. The downstairs rec room has space enough for an exercise room, a “pop-a-shot” basketball game, a hot tub, and an indoor swimming pool, which has sliding doors which open up outside. There is a workshop and a wine cellar there.

Outdoors: The five-acre property is surrounded by trees creating a quiet and relaxing setting. Foliage hides the home from the road during the summer and the owner says he can rarely see his neighbor’s house. Despite its seclusion, the home is less than 10 minutes away from “all conveniences.” A lovely brick patio off the gathering room is the place for outdoor barbecues and parties, while a wood deck allows for more intimate and quiet summer afternoons. The landscaped grounds feature many gardens and deer are frequent visitors. There are two three-car garages.
