House of the Week: Located on a private canal, this Brewerton property is ‘amazing’ inside and out - syracuse.com

BREWERTON, N.Y. – When Cat Kunkel is asked how she would describe her and her husband Jack’s waterfront home at 4568 Becker Road, in the River Island Estates in Brewerton, she starts with a simple statement.

“It is amazing!” she said.

The couple thought so right from the beginning.

In 2017, when Cat and Jack first saw the home’s online listing they knew they had to take a look.

Walking through the front door for the first time, and taking in the stunning two-story great room, with its amazing wall of windows and stone wood-burning fireplace, they were hooked.

“Whoa!” Cat said to her husband. “This is impressive.”

“We were sold,” they admitted.

Built in 1988, the custom-built home’s design and craftsmanship were what attracted them.

“The house has good bones,” Cat said.

Their love for the property is apparent right away. They describe it as “exquisite,” “relaxing,” “stunning,” and “warm and welcoming.”

The “majestic” great room is immense and can easily host large parties and gatherings.

But it also has a relaxing vibe to it.

“It is like being on vacation,” is how Jack describes the feel of the room.

“Our work lives are so frenetic,” Cat said, “it is great to come home and relax.”

Cat, who calls herself an avid cooker and baker, loves the kitchen.

“It is truly a chef’s kitchen,” she said.

The immense granite center island, which seats four comfortably at its counter, makes for easy buffet dinner parties. As does the professional appliances, which includes four ovens.

Cat jokes that the kitchen has so much storage space that some cupboards remain empty.

“I have more storage than stuff!” she jokes.

There is even space for her collection of cookbooks.

“That is why I’m fat,” Jack chimes in.

The kitchen is open and flows into an open dining and den area.

Cat calls it her “special place” and she enjoys snuggling with the family dogs, Bella and Bentley, there while reading, and watching TV.

Jack has his own room, another den, just off the great room, through double glass doors.

This “really cool room,” surrounded by windows, is where Jack sometimes retreats to.

“I can’t watch her British movies all the time,” he teases.

The master suite, one of five bedrooms in the house, looks out onto the private canal which links the property to the Oneida River. It has three closets and an extra-wide shower unit in the updated bathroom.

Outdoors, Cat calls the three-acre property like visiting “another world,” and she admits she does not know what she likes best, being indoors or out.

The immense paver patio, surrounded by beautiful landscaping, has a pergola, fire pit and a stone pool house.

The in-ground swimming pool receives so much warm sunshine and heats up so quickly, that Cat feels that a propane heater is unnecessary.

The couple have installed a new “super-solid” dock out on the canal with electricity for lights and music. It has a kayak slide.

The couple enjoy reading there and driving a pontoon boat through the canal and out onto the Oneida River and then Oneida Lake.

Residents of the River Island Estates, which Cat calls a “hidden gen community,” has access to tennis courts and a private boat launch.

“It is a great neighborhood,” she says.

The couple are spending more time in Florida and are looking to downsize.

Cat says anyone who buys this home with “love it and prosper from it.”

“It is not just a house; it is a home.”
