Former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan and his wife, Peggy Shanahan, have sold their Denver-area house for $15.725 million.

Located in Cherry Hills Village, Colo., an affluent city bordering Denver, the property is on roughly 4 acres. It was on and off the market for several years, first asking $22 million in 2016, according to Zillow. The sale is the most expensive for a single-family home in the metro-Denver area, said listing agent Sandy Weigand of Kentwood Real Estate, an affiliate of Berkshire Hathaway’s HomeServices of America. She co-listed the property with colleague Chuck Gargotto. Ms. Weigand said the buyer is a longtime Colorado resident. The Shanahans couldn't be reached for comment.

The Shanahans bought the land for approximately $4 million and completed construction of the house in 2008, Ms. Weigand said. The main residence is roughly 30,000 square feet with six bedrooms, a music room and wine grotto. On the home’s lower level, there is a two-lane bowling alley, poker room, racquetball court and golf simulator. There is also a guesthouse with two bedrooms and a 65-foot pool, according to a website for the property.

Ms. Weigand said the house cost more than $20 million to build. There are custom details, including a glass atrium with imported glass, intricate ceiling moldings and tile flooring imported from Italy in the great room. In the atrium, there is a bar with a hammered metal countertop.

Mr. Shanahan was head coach of the Denver Broncos from 1995 to 2008. He later coached the team now known as The Washington Football Team.

Like other pandemic-fueled markets, Denver’s housing prices shot up over the last 18 months due to an influx of out-of-state buyers, said Ms. Weigand. In Cherry Hills Village, the median sales price in September was $3.7 million, up 38% compared with that of Sept. 2020, according to the Denver Metro Association of Realtors. However, Ms. Weigand said there are still not many buyers for properties in the $20 million range.

The prior sales record for a single-family home in the metro-Denver area was $13.95 million in 2008, according to the local Realtor group. The current sales record for a residential property in the metro area is a penthouse at the Four Seasons Private Residences Denver that sold for $16 million in March 2020, records show.
