Sandi Squicquero: What makes a house a home? - Greeley Tribune

A house has many meanings.

A house is a habitation for people to live in. The symbolism of a house is associated with a protected place such as a mother’s womb or it may simply be a house of prayer devoted to Christian worship.

A house represents warmth, love, safety and family. Houses have deep emotional meanings.

As children, houses were the environment in which we lived, played, enjoyed meals, did our homework, argued with our siblings, and felt loved and safe.

It was home. If we were not fortunate to have these things, we had our dreams.

Homes also represent other things such as success and hard work to the communities we work in. As a child I remember driving with my mom to the upscale areas of town to see Christmas lights.

I was always in awe of the beautiful colors dancing on and off. It defined success.

Each house has a different feel to it. The energy of the house depends on the energy of the people who live in it.

Have you ever walked into a house and you have felt uneasy or uncomfortable in it? If so, you may be picking up the energy of a traumatic event that once happened there.

Someone may have died, been murdered or committed suicide in that home. Or perhaps someone may have experienced a traumatic loss in the house leaving the energy of grief there.

Vibes good or bad are defined as vibrating energy. Good vibes happen when you walk into a house and you feel at peace and comfortable.

This past week we went to a family wedding that was held in a beautiful venue in Porum, Oklahoma. The wedding venue, “The Cabin” was nestled in the hills of Oklahoma.

The Cabin was decorated in rustic décor and housed 8 bedrooms for the wedding party and their guests. Magnificent is the word that comes to mind.

For 2 days family and friends decorated tables, made floral arrangements, and ordered take out with plenty of “spirits ” to go around. In the background children were laughing, playing the piano, and being mischievous.

The atmosphere and energy was a little stressed but happy and inviting. The vibe was positive primarily because of the people who were there in celebration.

As I walked through “The Cabin” I could not help but wonder about the people who had built it and owned it. What were their dreams?

The present owners, the Palmers, were gracious and very accommodating to us. They told us that the cabin was used as a wedding venue as well as an air B&B and a place for groups to get away and share fond memories.

The wedding was a success for Justin and Meghan, and we were happy to be a part of it.

All too soon it was time to pack and return home. I was not ready to leave our son’s house.

That house, though not as grand as the cabin, holds memories of happy times for me that I treasure. It holds a family who is near and dear to my heart. A bed that was piled with quilts to keep me warm, a coffee pot, and special cups to hold my coffee and a feeling of peace and safety.

Two dogs live in the house that are spoiled and often children and grandchildren are in this house to share family time.

As I looked outside, the weather was sunny but cool. The swimming pool looked sad as the season was at an end and children were not happily splashing and swimming laps.

Most of the vibes were in the house as our family gathered around to say their goodbyes and wish us a safe trip home.

That house is filled with love, laughter and happiness and I knew it would always be there for me when I returned to visit. Abundant blessings and beautiful memories.
