Take a look at Alabama’s new proposed state House and Senate districts - AL.com

It’s redistricting time in Alabama, and depending on where you live, you could soon have a new representative in the state legislature, or even in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Alabama got its first look at new proposed districts for the the U.S. House, the state board of education and the state House and Senate last week. State legislators are set to vote on the proposed districts Tuesday, and if passed, lots will change, especially in the state legislature.

There are lots of changes in the state Senate map, and in general, many of the district lines make slightly more sense in the current proposal. They often more closely follow county lines, and are less likely to split communities into different legislative districts.

Data from Dave’s Redistricting, a group dedicated to “fair congressional and legislative districts and increased transparency in the redistricting process,” shows the new proposed map splits up just 26 voting precincts, while the old map split up 462 precincts.

State House

The Alabama House map is significantly more complicated than the Senate map, since there are 105 districts instead of just 35 for the Senate. And again, the new map has a significant number of changes, including fewer split voting precincts.

The new map splits 106 precincts between districts, compared to 1,086 in the old maps.
