The latest addition to San Francisco’s growing list of permanent closures during the pandemic is the House, a beloved neighborhood spot in North Beach.
Owners Larry and Angela Tse, who opened the restaurant in 1994, announced the closure on the House’s website and on Facebook Thursday afternoon. The Chronicle has reached out to the restaurant for additional comments.
“After careful consideration, we have decided to close the House,” the posts read. “A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful House community for your generous support throughout. It’s been a truly incredible, unforgettable journey of 26 years with so many special memories and friendships along the way.”
The House opened at a time when the dining world was seeing a boom in restaurants billing themselves as “Asian fusion.” Over time, the House became a pioneer in this category by offering diners anything from warm wasabi noodles with flat-iron steak to halibut topped with sushi and bits of taro, and even St. Louis-style barbecue ribs over a slaw.
While Larry and Angela Tse did not specify in the post as to what spurred the decision to close, the shut down comes at an especially precarious time for San Francisco restaurants. Earlier this week, Mayor London Breed announced the planned start date of July 13 for indoor dining in the city would be delayed indefinitely.
“We have no choice. We are living in COVID,” Breed said on Tuesday.
San Francisco’s Michelin-starred French bistro Nico also announced it will permanently close, and then reopen as a more casual, takeout-only restaurant, following Breed’s announcement, as did Velvet Cantina in the Mission District.
