Sharing House of Transylvania Christian Ministry, Inc. recently released its 2019 report, a report that shows community-wide support for an organization that helps to provide for those in need.
In 2019, Sharing House had 177 volunteers who donated nearly 16,000 hours of work. In the neighborhood of 1,000 people donated money to Sharing House. Of those, there were four individuals and seven couples who donated between $5,000 and $9,999 and three individuals and four couples who donated more than $10,000. Those numbers do not include the number of businesses, churches, schools, government entities and other organizations that also donated financially.
In addition to the volunteers and monetary donations, Sharing House received hundreds of thousands of dollars in in-kind contributions.
As a result, in 2019 Sharing House was able to give away more than a half million pounds of food, provide nearly 15,000 meals, pay nearly 1,200 power and heating bills and assist people with their water bills, housing payments and rent, clothing, shoes and medication. In the past year, Sharing House provided services to more than 6,000 people.
With each one of these numbers goes a human face, a person who does not go hungry or does not have to agonize between paying the heating bill or for medication, or a child who goes to school with new shoes or receives a few presents at Christmas.
Sharing House, however, is more than just a resource for meeting immediate needs. Over time people may become dependent on charities. Through its empowerment programs, which include teaching people how to cook and eat healthy meals, and putting people in touch with resources to help them achieve their goals, Sharing House is constantly promoting self-sufficiency. It provides resources, education and, maybe most importantly, hope.
What is also remarkable is the operation has such a low overhead. Only 3 percent of its expenditures is for administration. Another 4 percent is for fundraising. The remaining 93 percent goes directly into programs.
Sharing House is one of those examples where so many people willingly give their time, goods and money to help others. As Sharing House approaches the end of nearly four decades of operations, we are grateful for all associated with it and what they have done for the benefit of others.
