RICHMOND, Ind. — The barn-style garage offered no resistance Wednesday morning.
Then, Mikesell Excavating turned its attention to the burned house on the northeast corner of South 13th and South B streets. It, too, began crumbling.
The New Paris, Ohio-based excavating company used two of its excavators Wednesday to tear down the house damaged by an Aug. 18 fire that was intentionally set. Both excavators began about 11 a.m. to knock down the outbuilding then crush the debris.

Fifteen minutes later, one machine pushed through the house's wooden top story. Soon, both excavators were pushing and pulling on the structure as bricks and other materials rained to the ground.
Mikesell began on the east end of the house and worked to the west. The excavators climbed atop rubble to access, then knock down, more of the house.
The house's roof and second story collapsed during the fire, which began about 4:30 a.m. Aug. 18. That made the house unsafe and necessitated its destruction.
Chief of Fire Prevention Doug Gardner, who is Richmond Fire Department's fire investigator, said Wednesday the fire was intentionally set. He said there were multiple points of origin on north side of the second story.
"When the first units arrived on scene, there was heavy fire from the north windows," Gardner said. "That spread to the house to the north."
The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the occupants of that neighboring home on South 13th Street.
The fire also spread to the corner house's third floor, which had living space. That, Gardner said, caused the roof to collapse.
At the time of the fire, RFD was informed squatters might be in the house, which was supposed to be vacant; however, firefighters did not locate anyone at the time. There were no injuries in the fire.
Gardner said Richmond Police Department has joined the investigation into who set the fire. He said it's one of a recent string of fires that have been intentionally set, but he does not at this time see a connection among those house fires.
One of those occurred July 26 in a vacant home in the 1200 block of Liberty Avenue. Fire damaged the kitchen and attic of that home.
Gardner said a recent fire on South 12th Street also was intentionally set.
