Robert Bruce, who voted at Moorhead City Hall, said he was "in and out in about three minutes" as there was no line to wait in.
He said it felt good to be able to vote and he would do it if it was by mail-in ballot or at his polling location.
"It was easy and safe," he said as he donned his mask.
Laura Christianson, one of the head judges at the polling site, echoed the words of Clay County Auditor Lori Johnson by saying the turnout was "pretty light" at the polls, with only 152 voters showing up just before polls closed at 8 p.m.
She said they had no problem as only two of the 152 voters weren't wearing a mask when they arrived starting at 7 a.m. The election judges, however, had masks for them and they both put them on, she said.
"Everyone was really respectful," she said.
In that District 4A race, which includes most of the city of Moorhead and Oakport Township, the candidates were party-endorsed Heather Keeler and Moorhead City Council member Chuck Hendrickson.
Keeler, a community activist and enrolled member of the Yankton Sioux Tribe who is the multicultural student recruitment coordinator at North Dakota State University, has not run for public office before. She is on the city's Human Rights Commission.
Hendrickson is a technical writer with Aldevron in Fargo who serves on the Moorhead City Council. He and his wife, Renae, have four children. He is a graduate of Concordia College and has a master's degree from the University of Mary.
Keeler and Hendrickson are seeking to keep retiring state Rep. Ben Lien's seat in DFL hands. A Moorhead native, Lien originally won election to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2012 and was successful in three subsequent reelection bids in 2014, 2016 and 2018.
Keeler is the DFL-endorsed candidate. Hendrickson said he went ahead with a primary challenge because he promised supporters he would if he didn't get the party endorsement in May.
As of Tuesday, about 3,700 absentee ballots had been turned into the Clay County auditor's office, which compares to 566 such ballots in 2018.
Johnson said officials have been counting ballots through election equipment for about a week for that race and others.
More ballots could still be included in the total if they were postmarked by Tuesday, Aug. 11, and received in the auditor's office by Wednesday afternoon.
The county election board will canvass the final totals on Thursday afternoon when a final, official vote tally is expected, said Johnson, who also serves on the election panel.
The primary victor will advance to face unopposed Republican nominee Edwin Hahn in the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
The DFL holds a 75-59 advantage over Republicans in the Minnesota House, though the GOP has a slim 35-32 edge in the Senate.
