Built in 1939, this Park Lane home in Dallas might be recognizable to viewers of the television show ‘Dallas,’ which ran from 1978 to 1991.
The grandiose house on 4.3 acres was the fictitious home of recurring ‘Dallas’ character J. R. Ewing and his family. North Texas’ Southfork Ranch was also used to establish the look of Ewing’s residence.
Scenes from the first season of the show were filmed in the home, said co-listing agent Elly Holder of Compass Real Estate. For subsequent seasons, the home was recreated on a set in California.
The house was completely rebuilt between 2003 and 2006. Holder said the home went from its recognizable white facade to one with red brick, but several recognizable aspects of the home remain intact.
Six white columns stand on the house’s now Colonial Georgian-style front porch. Holder said these columns were preserved in the reconstruction and installed in the remodeled home.
Other retained features from the home include a chandelier that once hung in Ewing’s dining room which now hangs in the master suite. Wall sconces remain in the dining room.
The home boasts other recognizable features as well, although they hail from a different type of celebrity. The house’s iron driveway gates and slate roof tiles were procured from Governor William P. Clements residence at 4800 Preston Road, according to the house’s listing
All told, the 10,340-square-foot house includes five bedrooms, five bathrooms, two half-bathrooms, a library, a billiard room, a media room, a craft room and a four-car garage.
Holder’s co-listing agent and business partner Gretchen Brasch said the house’s position between two creeks — Bachman Creek and Browning Branch — adds to its allure.
“This property is such an iconic piece of Dallas' landscape in the way it sits at the confluence of the two creeks,” she said. “It's just so charming, and these owners did a great job of uncovering this pathway [to the creeks] and landscaping it in the most natural way.”
Holder said the creeks and the lot’s acreage create a distinct feeling of privacy.
“The other day, the neighbors were running their dogs on their property, and it really felt like we were out in the English countryside,” she said.
The ‘Dallas’ house at 4800 Park Lane is listed at $9,950,000.
