WILKES-BARRE — Take a trip back in time with the Wilkes-Barre Preservation Society’s fundraiser in honor of Colonel Zebulon Butler’s 289th birthday on Wednesday at the Frederick Stegmaier Mansion on Franklin Street.

A history buff’s paradise, the Butler House is the oldest house in Wilkes-Barre, having been built back in 1793. Butler, a leader during the Battle of Wyoming in the American Revolution, incorporated parts of a log cabin from 1773 into building the house, which was earmarked for demolition in 2017 but was spared and instead purchased by the Preservation Society with the goal of turning it into a museum.

“We own the house outright, so the money is going completely toward restoring the inside of the home,” said Tony Brooks, a Wilkes-Barre City councilman and the director and curator of the Wilkes-Barre Preservation Society.

Since purchasing the house, Brooks and his team have patched up the outside of the house and re-landscaped the surrounding yard. Now, the plan is to raise enough money to restore the inside of the home and take another step closer to the museum that will eventually inhabit the house.

Colonel Butler, whose birthday is actually on Jan. 23, is one of the most important historical figures to settle down in the area. Originally from Connecticut, he settled in the area after the war and his family passed the house down from generation to generation until 1868.

“Not only did he serve in the Revolutionary War, but he was also a political leader for Connecticut settlers,” Brooks said.

The fundraiser, described as a “cocktail party” by Brooks, will run from 5 to 7 p.m. Brooks also said that there are tentative plans to host a garden party in the summer months.

Anyone looking for tickets to the fundraiser could call 570-793-3631 to make a reservation. $40 buys a place at the fundraiser and a one-year membership into the Preservation Society. Space is limited.
