Stylish Postmodern house asks $1.2M in Minnesota - Curbed Ski

We cover plenty of Victorians, midcentury moderns, and Craftsman bungalows in our House of the Day column at Curbed, but one lesser appreciated design style is Postmodernism. Dating from about 1980 through 1995, Postmodern houses pushed back against the “less is more” vision of modernism, embracing classicism, color, and facades embedded with cultural references.

Take this five-bedroom, four-bath home in Wayzata, Minnesota, a suburb 20 minutes west of Minneapolis. Designed in 1986 and built as the family home for a local commercial architect, the house features a 20-foot vaulted ceiling, open layout, and thoughtful division of public and private spaces.

The main living area has a sunken seating area with ascending square windows adjacent to the oversized dining room. The kitchen features custom cabinetry, Carrara marble countertops, and a walk-in pantry. Other perks include a lower level theater room, a three-car garage, and a park-like setting outside with pool, deck, and perennial garden. Love what you see? 14801 Stone Road is on the market now for $1,199,000.
