SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Gustav Stickley House Foundation has started a campaign to raise $2.2 million over two years to complete the restoration of the famous furniture maker’s home in Syracuse.
The foundation will hold its first public campaign event from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 5 at the Everson Museum. Tickets are $50 a person and can be purchased at the door or in advance at the foundation’s website, gustavstickleyhousefoundation.org.
The fundraiser includes the premiere showing of a documentary from director Herb Stratford on the life and works of Stickley, creator of Mission-style furniture and a major voice in the American Arts and Crafts movement in the early 20th century.
Former Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney and Thom Filicia, an interior and product designer, are chairing the campaign.

Stickley bought the home at 438 Columbus Ave. in 1900 and renovated it following a Christmas Eve fire in 1901, turning its first and second floors into the first comprehensive Craftsman-style residential interior in the United States. He died in the house in 1942.
The Stickley family lived in the home on and off from 1900 until Stickley’s daughter Barbara Stickley Wiles sold it in the mid-1950s. The home had a series of owners over the next half-century until 1996, when the Audi family bought it to prevent its dismantling. The Audis own L. & J.G. Stickley Inc., the Manlius-based furniture company started by Gustav’s brothers Leopold and John George Stickley in 1900.
The Audis donated the house to the University Neighborhood Preservation Association in 2016. The association renovated the exterior of the home in 2018 with the help of $700,000 in state grants.
Ownership of the home will eventually be transferred to the Onondaga Historical Association, which plans to turn it into a museum and guest house furnished with reproductions of original Stickley designs.
