Daniel Goldman, the House Intelligence Committee lawyer who grilled a dozen witnesses during the panel's public impeachment hearings, is departing Capitol Hill and returning to New York, the committee confirmed Thursday.
Goldman became an early public face of the impeachment probe, leading the questioning of senior White House and State Department officials as they provided evidence that President Donald Trump sought to pressure Ukraine to investigate his Democratic rivals.
He's the third attorney who helped lead the House's impeachment strategy to depart the House in recent days. The other two, Barry Berke and Norm Eisen, helped handled the House Judiciary Committee's effort to make the constitutional case for Trump's removal from office.
The departure of the three lawyers is the latest sign that the House is shifting away from the investigations that threatened Trump's presidency, a dynamic that has unfolded as the 2020 presidential election season has moved to the fore.
"Over the past year, Dan Goldman has provided strategic guidance, wise counsel and steady leadership to our Committee through a turbulent, but critical time," House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said in a statement. "We know that the team Dan helped us build from scratch will continue their important work, and while we will all miss him in the committee, we know that his family is excited to get him back full-time.”
Goldman, in a statement, called his time with the committee "the honor of a lifetime" but said he was "eager to return to New York" to be with his family. Goldman has previously worked as a prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, where he helped lead organized crime cases.
