Modern house in the Netherlands updates a tradition - Curbed

With its gabled roof, clean lines, and all-black exterior, this modern Dutch dike house by Arjen Reas Architects draws on the surrounding architectural heritage while pushing the style forward.

The house, located on an embankment in the village of Lijnden in the Netherlands, is clad in a black timber facade and a black metal roof. But there’s also a ton of glass—including a protruding vertical window in the front and a wall of glass in the rear—to take advantage of both waterway and Amsterdam views.

In classic Dutch dike house form, the residence is arranged into multiple levels across two floors. The ground floor contains an elevated TV room with steps down to the open living room, dining room, and black-and-white kitchen overlooking the deck. Upstairs, the bedrooms and bathrooms offer a more private space.

The house is filled with moody grays and blues that contrast against the crisp, white details and modern furniture. It’s a handsome blend of homey and contemporary.
