Brownstein Hyatt hires House Financial Services Committee aide - Politico

With David Beavers and Daniel Lippman

FIRST IN PI — BROWNSTEIN HYATT HIRES HOUSE FINANCIAL SERVICES COMMITTEE AIDE: Katelynn Bradley has left the Hill to join Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck as a shareholder. She comes from the House Financial Services Committee, where she worked on the Democratic staff as director of investor and capital markets policy — a sought-after area of expertise on K Street. She plans to register as a lobbyist and will advise the firm’s financial services clients, which include Ally Financial, the Managed Funds Association and PricewaterhouseCoopers, according to disclosure filings. “She’s got great relationships, but more importantly she’s an incredibly smart, sharp lawyer,” Marc Lampkin, the managing partner of Brownstein Hyatt’s Washington office, said in an interview.

— During her time working for the committee, Bradley helped shape legislation, including the Small Business Credit Availability Act, which lessened restrictions on business development companies, she said in an interview. She’ll work alongside some of the Brownstein Hyatt lobbyists who lobbied her while she was on the committee. She’s banned from lobbying lawmakers on the committee, as well as their staffers for a year, under House ethics rules.

FORMER CHRISTIE AIDE REGISTERS TO LOBBY: Rich Bagger, a onetime chief of staff to former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, has registered as a lobbyist through Christie’s firm, Christie 55 Solutions. He’ll lobby for Donjon-SMIT, a salvage and firefighting company, on issues related to the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, according to a disclosure filing. The law deals with how the federal government responds to oil spills. Bagger worked as Celgene’s executive vice president of corporate affairs and market access before heading to Christie 55 Solutions, according to the firm’s website. He also worked as an in-house lobbyist for Pfizer more than a decade ago. He didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

BUTTIGIEG FUNDRAISERS MIGRATE TO BIDEN:Orin Kramer, an influential Democratic fundraiser and hedge-fund founder who spent the past year helping Pete Buttigieg, is throwing his weight behind former Vice President Joe Biden,” The Wall Street Journal’s Julie Bykowicz reports. “Mr. Kramer is among several prominent Buttigieg backers who have decided to help Mr. Biden after the former South Bend, Ind., mayor suspended his presidential campaign late Sunday.” Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) “quickly announced his support for Mr. Biden, and other former Buttigieg fundraisers said Monday that they were likely to move to Mr. Biden.”

— And Alex Slater, the founder of the Clyde Group, a Washington public affairs firm, “who had been one of Mr. Buttigieg’s fundraisers, said Monday that he also now will help raise money for Mr. Biden. ‘Biden is the clear choice to carry the Buttigieg legacy in this campaign,’ Mr. Slater said.”

YODER REGISTERS TO LOBBY: Add former Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-Kan.) to the list of the lawmakers who left office last year who have registered as lobbyists now that they're no longer banned from lobbying Congress under House ethics rules. Yoder, who joined HHQ Ventures last year, announced this morning that he would register to lobby for nine clients, all of which he brought to the firm: the American Alliance for Economic Development, the Consumer Technology Association, Dama Financial, Garmin, the International Franchise Association, the Kansas City Coalition, Microsoft, Secure Identity LLC and the U.S. Travel Association.

OPEN YOUR WALLETS: Kate Winkler Keating of the Duberstein Group, Kevin Casey of the S-3 Group and Honeywell International PAC will host a fundraising lunch for Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday at Bistro Cacao, according to an invitation obtained by PI. Winkler Keating and Casey are both former aides to Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.), who’s now on K Street himself as a senior policy adviser at Squire Patton Boggs. Honeywell International is also a client of the Duberstein Group. You can get in the door by shelling out $5,000 if you want to be a host, $2,500 if you want to be a sponsor or $500 if you’re willing to go as a mere individual (or $1,000 if you’re paying through your PAC).

BALLARD ADDS ANOTHER FORMER ADMINISTRATION OFFICIAL: Ballard Partners has hired a second Trump administration veteran: Trent Morse, who was previously the Department of Health and Human Services' White House liaison. He plans to register to lobby when he's allowed to do so under President Donald Trump's ethics pledge, which restricts former officials' ability to lobby the administration. Ballard hired Hunter Morgen, a former White House aide, last month as a senior adviser. POLITICO Pulse first reported the hire.

THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE CHEERED ON SAND HILL ROAD: Count tech executives and venture capital types among those who fear Bernie Sanders winning the Democratic nomination, The New York TimesNellie Bowles and Erin Griffith report. “I’m trying to balance what socialism means versus four more years of Trump, and honestly it feels like which is the worse of two evils?’ said Venky Ganesan, a partner at the venture capital firm Menlo Ventures, whose disaffection with the presidential field has led him toward the Common Sense Party,” a new moderate political party in California. “He said the vast majority of his venture capital industry colleagues had the same dilemma. ‘Eighty percent are thinking the same thing, but many do not speak out,’ Mr. Ganesan said.”

ANNALS OF CAMPAIGN FINANCE: Newsmax, the conservative site whose chief executive, Christopher Ruddy, is close to Trump, ran a story in September that mentioned a new TV ad run by 1820 PAC, a super PAC backing Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine). The story didn’t disclose that Newsmax had given $50,000 to the super PAC the month before, The Daily Beast’s Lachlan Markay reports.

IF YOU MISSED IT ON FRIDAY:Jared Kushner has divested from Cadre, the real estate technology startup he co-founded, according to a person familiar with the matter, after the business attracted investment offers that could pose conflicts of interest for the White House aide,” Bloomberg NewsJennifer Jacobs and Caleb Melby report. Kushner “transferred his interest in Cadre to a trust that sold his shares back to the company. He recently listed his stake in federal disclosures as being worth between $25 million and $50 million, and the sale price was in that range, according to the person.”
