These accidental ice palaces may be gorgeous — but they’re trapping their residents.
Fueled by 48 hours of gale-force winds, water spray from Lake Ontario froze in place during blizzard-like conditions in upstate Hamburg, NY, over the weekend, encasing homes in inches — and, in some cases, feet — of ice.
Now people are struggling to get in — and out — of their homes.
“After several hours of water hitting the house, it built up into several feet [of ice] on my house, and now I live in a cave,” area homeowner Ed Mis tells his local ABC affiliate. “I actually had to go out a secondary door and chisel my way back into the house by breaking the ice.”
The ice even froze solid Mis’ hurricane shutters and turned his backyard into a slippery slope. His neighbor’s house is worse off and is barely visible under its cold new covering. But Mis’ biggest concern is what will happen when the ice thaws.
“With the weather going up to 50 [degrees] next week, we’ll have to worry about the melting, the flooding. There’s no place to go right now if something happens to the house,” he says.
In the meantime, iced-in homeowners need to worry about rubberneckers, impressed by the look of the homes, House Beautiful reports. Area police have even issued a warning, reminding the public that the ice is unsafe, unstable and “that the majority of the ice encapsulated buildings in the Hoover Road area are private residences,” and trespassers can face arrest.
Public infrastructure, including fire hydrants, have also been encapsulated in ice.
The ice homes are the most recent weather-related issue in a long list of problems for area residents. “This is like our sixth storm in a matter of a few months, and it’s kind of wearing on everybody,” Mis says. “Never have I seen anything like this in the past.”
