JOLIET, IL — About six weeks after the Joliet Police Department found a badly decomposed human body inside an abandoned house at 411 Sherman St., the Joliet City Council has designated the property as a public nuisance.
At last week's meeting, the council voted to make five properties across the city of Joliet public nuisances. The formal designation gives the city's legal department the authority to proceed with condemnation proceedings in hopes of getting the structures bulldozed.
Some properties get demolished within a matter of weeks after the council's declaration. Others can take a couple years, if they're tied up in a bank foreclosure, for example.
Here's a rundown of Joliet's latest five properties now deemed official nuisances.

411 Sherman Street

The city of Joliet has more than $1,000 in board-up expenses, having to secure this building numerous times. There are also $1,400 in unpaid administrative adjudication fees, city records state.
"The final board-up was at the request of JPD after discovering a body in the building in February of this year," city documents show. Joliet Patch previously reported the remains found inside the house were Damen Amos, a 37-year-old Joliet homeless man.
1105 N Prairie Avenue

There is $2,179 owed to the city in board-up and grass cutting fees, and administrative adjudication fines total $6,800. There is no contact information for owner. A pre-public nuisance letter was mailed out Nov. 25 2019, city memos show.
29 Wilson Avenue
Single-family house that caught fire Oct. 11, 2019. To date, permits have not been submitted to repair or demolish home. Prior to fire, the property had multiple code violations that had not corrected since 2016, city records show.
211 Wilson Avenue
Single family house that caught fire July 30, 2019. To date, permits have not been submitted to repair or demolish home, city records indicate.
224 Duncan Street
