A 50-person bipartisan House caucus, evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, has developed its own plan for how to safely reopen the US economy as the coronavirus pandemic continues to threaten American lives.
The Problem Solvers Caucus on Monday released its “Reopening and Recovery ‘Back to Work’ Checklist,” a set of policy recommendations as the federal government works to reduce the spread of the virus and reignite America’s workforce.
The proposal calls for “a robust, rapid testing system” to be put in place before the economy can be reopened. It also says personal protective equipment, such as N95 masks, goggles and gloves, must be provided to all health care workers and employees in essential sectors, as well as access to masks in all schools before they can be reopened.
The 50 House lawmakers say low-interest loans and tax incentives must be expanded to restart ailing businesses and help provide working capital to purchase necessary supplies and hire necessary workers.
They also call for eliminating unnecessary and outdated regulations that stand in the way of providing necessary economic relief or lifesaving health outcomes, providing funding to local and state governments, and offering rent and mortgage relief through either temporary forbearance or long-term loans.
Problem Solvers co-chairman Tom Reed (R-NY) said of the proposal, “This is a time for everyone to unite to overcome this multi-front threat to our nation’s future. The Reopening and Recovery Back to Work Checklist is a bipartisan plan to safely reopen America and reignite the economy. If we stand together, we will not fail. We will revive America through our country’s primary force of good — the power of her people.”
