House of the Week: Contemporary home in Volney blends privacy, convenience and beauty - syracuse.com

VOLNEY, N.Y. – When Ralph and Cathy Tufts are asked to explain what makes their home at 107 Wood Ridge Lane in Volney special, Cathy came prepared with a list.

She loves her all-season sunroom where she enjoys reading, the incredible kitchen and the sunken great room with its cozy wood-burning fireplace, magnificent windows, which looks out onto the incredible back patio and heated in-ground swimming pool.

When she was finished, she summed up her list, simply.

“We thought it was absolutely gorgeous.”

It was also exactly what they were looking for in 2013.

The cedar and brick exterior contemporary home, built in 1990, offered privacy, convenience and a great home for entertaining.

The couple enjoy their privacy and wanted to live in the country but be close enough to get to Syracuse in a timely fashion.

Nestled on over five acres of beautifully landscaped property, the home is built well off the road at the end of a circular driveway.

Ralph calls the grounds a “park-like setting,” with paths running along the well-manicured yards and woods. The incredible back deck surrounds a heated in-ground swimming pool and features a pool house with its own kitchen, bar and changing area.

“It is the best pool we’ve ever had,” Cathy said, with a large shallow area for children and a very deep end for more experienced swimmers and divers.

Inside, again, the house checked all the Tufts’ boxes.

Ralph believes that the home’s original designer was something of a perfectionist, working meticulously to get all the angles correct in the home’s amazing woodworking in the kitchen, cherry library and in the great room. Balconies from the second floor offer spectacular views into that room.

Carol believes that everything in the home was designed to “be easy and beautiful.”

“It is unbelievable the way it is laid out,” she said.

Large rooms are all very bright and airy. The home’s many windows let in the sunlight and allows for views all over the property.

“The house has no feeling that it is 30 years old,” Ralph said. “It looks a lot younger than it is.”

After Ralph casually mentions that the house has three wet bars in it (in the pool house, sunroom and great room), he jokes that, well, “it is a house for entertaining.”

With its spacious formal dining room, kitchen, with its “top-of-the-line” appliances and amazing amount of storage space, he says the house can easily accommodate parties of 50 people or more.

Now both in their 80s, the Tufts are tired of the long drive between their home in Volney and their other house in Arizona, where they are spending more and more time.

“If we could pick it up and bring with us,” Ralph said, “we would.”
