Ohio man lives in underground house he built 40 years ago - New York Post

Bill Scherbauer may be six feet under, but he’s very much alive.

The Centerville, Ohio, resident built his house — which is almost completely underground — in 1979 after enlisting the help of some local high school students.

“When I did this one, we took our loan to the bank, and I had a rendering of it. We told them that we’re building a house in the hill,” Scherbauer told the Dayton Daily News. “And they looked at the rendering and they thought, ‘It’s a nice looking house. Oh, no problem.’ We didn’t tell him it was earth-sheltered.”

Ninety percent of the house is covered in several feet of sod, and what appears to be the backyard is actually the roof. Just a porch, a front door, a garage and a partial roofline are visible from the driveway.

Most people assume his home looks like a bunker, but it doesn’t.

“There are hundreds of ways to build these things,” Scherbauer said. “But why wouldn’t you spend a few dollars more and build something that had a façade?”

Scherbauer actually enjoys quite a bit of light, thanks to strategically placed skylights and panels throughout that create a spacious, airy feeling.

Earth-sheltered homes are also energy efficient.

In the winter, Scherbauer just needs one cord of wood to heat it. “The house wants to head for 55 degrees, which is ground temperature,” he said.

The underground home is also naturally protected from extreme weather and temperature variations — and it cost less to insure. Residences like this can, however, be more expensive to build and more difficult to get a mortgage for. That’s why Scherbauer opted to design and build the home himself: to keep construction costs low.

While his home is mostly hidden from view, it gets thousands of visitors through a local home tour event called Beachwood Homearama. And he hopes it inspires others to build underground dwellings, too.

Scherbauer said, “They’d come in and say, ‘Well, this house is underground, and it looks like a regular house.'”
