A house on Quincy's north side was heavily damaged by fire early Wednesday morning.
Crews were called to 1803 Highland Drive North until just after 5:30 a.m.
Assistant Chief Scott Lucey says someone in the home woke up and saw a "flickering light". All four people in the home got out safely, but several cats were unaccounted for. Lucey said the home did not have working smoke detectors.
Lucey said the home sustained heavy fire damage. Damage and char from the fire was visible on the front of the house.
The cause of the fire was not known, but fire officials planned to begin their investigation Wednesday morning.
Ameren Illinois crews were also called to the scene to shut off power to the home.
The road was blocked in the area, near Quincy University's baseball stadium, while firefighters fought the fire.
The family said they planned to stay with relatives for the immediate future. The American Red Cross was also called in to help.
