House of the Week: With 236 feet of lakefront, this Brewerton home captures the ‘essence’ of Oneida Lake - syracuse.com

Brewerton, N.Y. — The beginning of the listing for the magnificent property at 9480 Bluff Circle in Brewerton sums up everything you need know about it.

It is “Destination Paradise.”

Set along 236 feet of Oneida Lake, the 7,000 square-foot Colonial-style home captures the beauty its surroundings with its tall windows, unique turrets, and unique covered back deck.

For the first time this one-of-a-kind home is on the market.

The home was the brainchild of Gary and Yolanda Tooley, who have both passed away, who, along with a group of their friends, loved the lake and wanted to live together in a private cul-de-sac.

They called the group of houses “The Bluff.”

Architect Doug Klepper was hired, while Yolanda, an artist by trade, worked on creating a home that her daughter, Jacqueline, calls, a “timeless classic,” which can suit nearly everybody’s tastes.

“She really had a good eye for design,” she said of her mother.

(While the house features many timeless elements, like Brazilian hardwood floors and marble, the home has many modern updates, like a security system, complete-home stereo system and radiant floor heat on all levels, including in the attached three-car garage.)

Jacqueline Tooley says her parents had two goals with the design of the house.

First, was to take “capture the essence of the lake.”

“You never get bored while you are there,” Tooley said. “The views outside change during the day and with the changing of the seasons.”

The turrets on the back of the house, which includes the master bedroom’s sitting room and dining area off the kitchen, offer 180-degree views of the lake.

“Sometimes,” she jokes that family members would ask, “why don’t we sit in some of these rooms more often.”

The covered deck and patio allow for the enjoyment of the lake all year long.

“There was so much to see,” Tolley said. “It always felt like you were on vacation when you visited there."

Second, the house was a great gathering place for families and friends.

The open concept great room, with its own bar and custom built-ins over the one of the home’s three gas fireplaces, opens right into the fantastic kitchen.

“My parents love to cook and to entertain,” Tolley remembered, “and this allowed them to keep everyone together.”

The formal dining room also acts as a library and music room, large enough for a piano.

The house also has a finished walk-out lower level with a large theater room, wine storage and a full bathroom and kitchen. The incredible amount of storage space could be used for an additional bedroom, creating an in-law suite.

“The whole family has so many memories of spending time with our parents there,” Tolley said.
