This Japanese-Inspired Timber and Glass House Stands Somewhat Secluded in the Portland, Oregon, Suburbs - Mansion Global

Listing of the Day

Location: Happy Valley, Portland, Oregon

Price: $1.588 million

This timber and glass house in the Portland suburb of Happy Valley was built to Japanese- and American-design principles.

Designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma in collaboration with American sustainable house builder Suteki, Suteki House has a Japanese appearance and yet is entirely suited to its Oregon surroundings.

Set on a triangular plot in a suburban setting, it is arranged in an L shape around a Japanese garden, affording it a private and natural setting. Its two wings look out onto manicured lawns, a creek, stone walls, acers and other specimen trees.

Similar to traditional Japanese houses, the three-bedroom house has been raised off the ground by a platform, helping it sit lightly in its surroundings. Thin pillars and extensive glazing accentuate the feeling of weightlessness and lightness.

To increase the sense of seclusion, the house features "vertical louvers… that act as a screen simultaneously shading the house, allowing for outside views, from within but affording privacy from the outside," according to the property sales details.

Windows meet in the corners of the kitchen, master bedroom, and upstairs living room, promoting unobstructed panoramas, according to the property’s sales details. "In typical Japanese houses, Kuma says, every corner is open like that," it says. "If the window is just open on one side, it is two-dimensional, but if we open both sides it is three-dimensional openness."

The property’s living spaces have double-height ceilings, which create voluminous spaces drenched in light, and feature glazed doors that open fully, allowing the rooms to flow out onto a large wraparound outdoor deck.

Wooden detailing appears extensively throughout the house in the form of plank flooring, wall paneling, louvered ceilings and walls, kitchen cabinets, the oversized front door and the cladding on the overhanging horizontal roof.

Kengo Kuma has only designed eight residences in the world, and his most recent project is the New National Stadium in Tokyo, built for the 2020 Olympic Games, said listing agent Terry Sprague, CEO of Luxe Christie’s International Real Estate. "This is a significant representation of his artful architectural style available as a residence."

Stats

The 4,739-square-foot property has three bedrooms including a ground-floor master bedroom with a bathroom styled as an updated Japanese spa room, an open-plan living room/dining room/kitchen, a mud room, a gallery, a study and a garage.

Amenities

The house features high-performance glass and passive cooling and lighting systems, which offer year-round climate control, according to the property’s sales details.

Design Pedigree

Suteki House was built for the 2017 NW Natural Street of Dreams, an annual new home tour that takes place in Portland, according to Luxe Christie’s International Real Estate.

Neighborhood Notes

Suteki House stands in Happy Valley, a city in Clackamas County, 10 miles southeast of Portland.

Happy Valley has a small-town vibe, a small population—it has around 21,200 residents according to the recent U.S. Census Bureau estimates—and is popular with families.

Portland, a city known for its food scene, hipster vibe, and vintage shops, is easily commutable—the journey time by car is about 20 minutes.

There is a four-mile trail network in the city at Mount Talbert Nature Park and year-round skiing opportunities are less than 1.5 hours away at Mount Hood, Oregon’s highest mountain.
