OAKLAND — One man was killed and another injured in a two-alarm house fire in Oakland, authorities said.

At 4:12 a.m., the Oakland Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at 34 Malta Court, a house near Interstate 880 and 98th Avenue, said Battalion Chief Tracey Chin.

Flames had fully engulfed one house and began licking the home next door at 26 Malta Court, Chin said, prompting her to call a second alarm. One 76-year-old man was immediately transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

About 40 firefighters battled the blaze for more than an hour, getting it under control at about 5:35 a.m.

Inside the home, firefighters recovered the body of another man and pronounced him dead. His name and age were not immediately available.

Two more people were evacuated from 34 Malta Court without injuries, while six people were evacuated from the home next door, Chin said.

The home where the fire began was under renovation, Chin said, and its occupants appeared to be transient and possibly staying there temporarily. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

“We’re very fortunate that it wasn’t windier and to have the fire spread much farther,” Chin said.

Crews remained on scene as of about 7 a.m. Monday to mop up.
